Media Coverage - Don't believe Proposal 3 ad

Web-posted November 4, 2006. Editorial. The Oakland Press.

There's an advertisement being run on the radio and television about Proposal 3 - which, if passed, would create a new dove hunting season.

The ad is so ridiculous it warrants some mention.

The Oakland Press has come out against the proposal. Basically, a dove hunting season isn't needed. There's plenty of hunting of other game.

But the ad urging a "yes" vote makes some outrageous claims.

It talks about how a ban would infringe "upon our rights," how a "group of extremists is trying to change our way of life and restrict our freedoms" and how the proposal is the first step toward a total hunting ban. The ad even says the ban would lead to not allowing research on animals to find cures for a number of deadly diseases.

All of these claims are false. The real extremists are the people who wrote this ad and a few newspapers that have used this wrong information in their editorials.

Realistically, whether you vote "yes" or "no" on this proposal, the only thing that will happen is that dove hunting will either be allowed or banned.

Other game hunting is safe. Also safe are your rights to bear arms, as well as animal research for medical purposes.

Those behind the ad would have you think that banning dove hunting will "change America forever."

Get real. Mom, apple pie and the American way of life will continue whether there is dove hunting or not.
