Next Tuesday, local residents will join voters from across Michigan - and across the nation - heading to the polls to make decisions on everything from local issues to choosing state governors and U.S. Congress members.
Each election has its own set of proposals, unique personalities and signs of the times. Indeed in Michigan, the dreary state of the economy enters just about every political discussion.
We believe this election is one of the most important ever. When things aren't gong all that well, it is important for the people to help right the ship by making wise decisions at the polls, for their own communities, for their state and for the nation.
As we state at the beginning of each year, we make our decisions from a fiscally conservative standpoint. We encourage less government and more private enterprise. Keeping those basic caveats in mind, we have reviewed the state ballot proposals. Ballot initiatives are often the most confusing choices voters have to make. It is much easier to listen to a candidate state his or her platform issues and judge them based on their understanding of the issues and their articulation of any potential solutions and ideas they have. In short, we can judge our candidates easier than ballot proposals with "yes" or "no" camps promoting their positions with equal ferocity.
PROPOSAL 06-3 is "a referendum on Public Act 160 of 2004 - an act to allow the establishment of a hunting season for mourning doves."
No on 3. We have nothing against hunting in Michigan. Mourning doves are not sporting targets. They are sitting ducks, so to speak. This is just a disgusting proposal.
