An internal poll released today by Lake Research Partners shows that 54 percent of the likely voters polled will vote no on Proposal 3, which would create a dove hunting season.
The poll was conducted by Lake Research Partners but was commissioned by the Committee to Keep Doves Protected, which is the group that's opposed to the proposal.
The poll showed that 30.4 percent of the 600 likely voters polled would support the proposal and 15.4 percent were undecided. In the results, it's stated that "support for the proposal has decreased since the Detroit Free Press/Local Michigan Poll in September, which showed 40 percent voting yes and 50 percent voting no, with 10 percent undecided."
"We're delighted with the results of the poll," said Steve Serkaian with the Committee to Keep Doves Protected. "This poll reinforces why Michigan voters believe that there's no good reason to shoot doves. This poll is very consistent with previous polls that have been released in the past 10 and, more importantly, the last two years."
The poll also found that all groups of people - men and women - are against the proposal and that less than one-third of those polled in each area are in support of Proposal 3. In Wayne County 22 percent support the proposal, 33 percent in the outer Metro area, 27 percent support it in Central Michigan, 37 percent support it in Western Michigan and 27 percent support it in Northern Michigan.
The poll was based on interviews with 600 likely voters from Oct. 21-23. It has a sampling error of plus or minus four percent.
Several more public officials including former Gov. William Milliken, U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit), former Senator and sportsman Harry Gast and primatologist Jane Goodall decided to oppose Proposal 3.
Seven state Senators and nine state Representatives were also included on a list of those opposed to Proposal 3.
